• Keep your data portable
• Store your data locally
• Always have a backup
• Don't rely on features that only work in one app
• Beware of apps that make it hard to leave
• When using a gatekeeper app, make data export a daily or weekly ritual you never miss
• Don't be dogmatic about open formats
• Use the right tool for the job
• Don't use a digital tool (even one that meets all the above criteria) when pen and paper is a better choice
